The frog and the wild rose symbolize the beginning and end of seasons. Wild rose water is used to cleanse after someone passes. Frogs waking up are the first sign of spring, and the end of our winter ceremonies, time to get working again. The silver stars are their connection on this box. The sturgeons and salmon are there reflecting our connection to the water. Both live in our waterways, and both journey out into the ocean. I included these because of my grandmothers journey being raised in Kwantlen instead of Tsartlip, and how teachings from freshwater and saltwater villages are the same but the language spoken is different. To me, when I use salmon in my wok it is a reminder of my family in Tsartlip and at Kwantlen, and how we have family across Coast Salish country. I have the rose surrounded by leafs and the sturgeon to symbolize the growth and knowledge of elders. The frog is surrounded by plantain leafs and the salmon to symbolize new growth and shorter cycles, vs the older and seasoned lives of sturgeon. I wanted to include plant medicine (the rose and the plantain) because part of understanding language culture and ceremony, and culture is reflection of geography and environment. Knowing whats in your environment opens opportunities to learn. The 4 wolves on the ends represent 4 in Salish culture, but also in my life. 4 grandparents, 4 main mentors, 4 directions, and 4 seasons. The 6 stars at the ends (3 on each side) represent some of the history in New Westminster where this box will first be shown. 6 prominent chiefs were executed in New Westminster, and to honour them I wanted to put these stars on the box, being protected by the wolves, being held in our culture."

This piece has been exhibited several times part of the "Honouring our Grandmother's Healing Journey" created and curated by Nadine Spence. the photos here are from the New Westminster Museum, for "Where the Waters Mix".

2026
Alder and paua shell inlay
5" H x 2 ½" W
Private collection

"This piece is the first comb that I have carved."

2023
Red cedar
30" dia.

"This is a reflection of Coast Salish spindle whorls. I wanted this little loom to be reflecting supernatural history, and how makers can be tapped into a supernatural way of being."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0806/6164/3510/files/AtheanaPicha_2025charitybox-001-atheana4242.jpg?v=1786227826
wild-rose-rattle
Wild Rose Rattle

2023
Acrylic on yellow cedar
5 ½" H x 2" D x 2" W
Private collection

Photos by the Lattimer Gallery

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0806/6164/3510/files/APitcha_WildRoseRattle-web1_2048x.jpg-atheana4242.webp?v=1786228073
lightning-snake
Lightning Snake

2023
Acrylic paint on yellow cedar
5 ½" H x 2" D x 2" W
Private collection

Photos by the Lattimer Gallery

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0806/6164/3510/files/APicha_LightningSnakeRattle-web1_2048x.jpg-atheana4242.webp?v=1786228199
basket-of-medicine
Basket of Medicine

2024
Cedar bark, acrylic paint, raffia
12" H x 12" D x 12" L
BC Nurses and Midwives

"My late Uncle Shane Pointe asked me to weave and paint this basket for him, the colours representing ocean, land, medicine, and sunlight.
